An Australian First: Mindflight7 & The FUSE Cup present the National Schools VR Beat Saber Competition
Virtual reality offers a uniquely engaging platform for both entertainment and education, and Mindflight7 is leveraging both to build skills for the classroom and beyond.
As Australia’s largest VR education provider, Mindflight7 is passionate about harnessing the power of immersive technology to enhance student learning, engagement, and wellbeing. In 2025, they took this commitment to the next level by launching Australia’s first-ever National Schools VR Beat Saber Competition.
Partnering with The FUSE Cup, a global leader in school esports, Mindflight7 hit the road to bring this groundbreaking initiative to schools across the nation. Kicking off in April 2025, a total of 25 schools participated in regional qualifying rounds held across the Gold Coast, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Sydney.

What is Beat Saber?
Beat Saber is a VR rhythm game where players use lightsabers to slash through blocks that fly towards them in sync with music. Widely considered a staple of VR, Beat Saber is the #1 best-selling game on Meta Quest’s Horizon Store, with around 10 million users reported in 2025.
This competition offered a unique opportunity for students to:
- Develop valuable skills: Beat Saber requires focus, coordination, and strategic thinking – all essential skills for success in the classroom and beyond.
- Experience the power of VR: Immersion in the exciting world of virtual reality to discover its potential for education and entertainment.
- Embrace friendly competition: Competing against other students in a safe and supportive environment, fostering teamwork and sportsmanship.

The competition culminated in the Grand Final at The FUSE Esports Festival, held at Southern Cross University on the Gold Coast in November 2025, where a student from Forest Lake High School was crowned champion. Mindflight7 also acknowledged the critical role of teachers in driving positive change through gaming and technology, presenting the Community Choice Most Inspirational Esports Teacher Award to Karlo Jelaska from Servite College (WA).

Rike Browning, Head of Marketing at Mindflight7, noted the immense success of the competition for not only the participating students, but its impact on the wider ecosystem of teachers, schools, and businesses:
“Our mission at Mindflight7 is simple: put (Queensland) schools at the absolute forefront of the XR revolution. Our partnership with The Fuse Cup proves that eSports is more than a hobby – it’s a vital entry point for students to master immersive tools with total confidence. We’re incredibly proud to champion this community, from celebrating our national champions to honoring trailblazing educators who are leading the digital charge. For businesses and schools alike, this is about more than just gaming. It’s about building a tech-forward ecosystem where immersive, curriculum-aligned experiences prepare students for a world where these digital fluencies are no longer optional.”
For Mark Honnibal, QLD VR Manager at Mindflight7, it was a showcase of VR’s power as a platform to engage, educate, and upskill:
“Facilitating the technical side of the first national VR Beat Saber Grand Final was a front-row seat to the future of education. By dropping immersive tech into a competitive arena, we aren’t just giving students a game – we’re building a high-performance environment that demands raw focus, coordination, and technical grit. Seeing that level of intensity from finalists across the country, especially with Forest Lake Highschool taking the win, proves that VR eSports is the ultimate vehicle for student engagement. It’s the bridge between traditional sportsmanship and the advanced digital skills Queensland’s future workforce needs right now. The tech is the tool, but the engagement is the breakthrough.”
Daniel Aivaliotis-Martinez, COO at The FUSE Cup, added:
“At The FUSE Cup, we’re passionate about introducing students to the power of emerging technology in positive and meaningful ways. Partnering on the National Beat Saber Competition with Mindflight 7 was a fantastic way to showcase how VR can drive engagement, digital skills, and fun: while keeping wellbeing at the heart of everything we do.”
