Mater & People Tech Revolution VR Training Program - Case Study

THE OPPORTUNITY

Mater runs an extensive network of hospitals, health centres and related businesses, and is a nationally accredited education provider. One of their existing training programs, ‘Speaking with Good Judgment’, educates their hospital staff on the method and process of having respectful conversations within a hospital structure.

Traditionally, this training included roleplaying to act out the conversations. Mater Education was looking for a way to test the viability of Virtual Reality (VR) as a delivery model to improve and modernise the training program. The result of this was a novel interpretation of the content and a scalable, immersive education experience for Mater’s people.

Through Advance Queensland and The Queensland XR Hub, Mater was connected with People Tech Revolution, a Queensland-based startup specialising in human-centred VR design and development in the health and social care sectors. They entered a contract with Mater to develop a solution to their problem.

THE SOLUTION

People Tech Revolution assisted Mater in the scoping process of the project and collaborated with them to codesign VR scenarios to be integrated into Mater’s existing training program, which will replace and/or augment the roleplaying that has previously been included in the training.

Scenes from the VR experience, which were modelled after parts of the hospital environments in the Mater network.

To increase realism and familiarity, some of the scenes in the training were modelled after parts of the hospital environments in the Mater network. The training will be rolled out in South-East Queensland, Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Townsville and Mackay. Mater has invested in Pico Neo 3 headsets and approximately 100 people across these locations will participate in this pilot project.

The next stage of this project will see People Tech Revolution and Mater measure the success of this pilot VR training project and assess the applicability of immersive VR for further training content for Mater staff.

THE IMPACT

This pilot project acts as a case study to demonstrate to Mater that, through this partnership, they can create valuable, scalable VR training solutions that enhance learning experiences and outcomes, are efficient and can be applied to a wide range of scenarios across Mater.

People Tech Revolution have described Mater as their ideal client, who were engaged throughout the process, facilitated efficient delivery of the project, and were trusting of the team at People Tech as the experts in XR. As a result, both parties have been able to develop a successful solution and an effective business partnership, both in this project and potentially beyond.
